Can't daisy chain USB hubs on MacBook Pro m1

I can't add more than two USB hubs in a daisy chain on my new MacBook Pro M1 Pro. (Monterey 12.5.1) This worked fine on my old 2018 16", so don't understand why it wouldn't work now. The USB hubs are all powered, and USB 3. They work fine on their own, but not in a chain of 3 or more.

Furthermore, when I start my computer, it won't recognise my USB hub (in which my external screen is also connected) , I have to take out the cable, and insert it again for the computer to find the hub.

It's the same result for all the ports on the Mac. And I've tested different cables - all equipment works fine.
