Monitor resolution changes when MacBook lid is closed.

I recently purchased a Samsung ViewFininity 28" UR55 monitor that has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 with the intent of docking my MacBook (Air, M1) with the lid closed on my desk. Initially, I plugged the monitor in, and it worked perfectly. Today I switched power strips at my desk, unplugging and replugging the monitor and my MacBook in the process of it. Now, whenever I close my MacBook lid, my display changes from 3840 * 2160 @ 30Hz to 1920 * 1080 @ 60 Hz.

I've tried power cycling both the MacBook and the monitor. The monitor is hooked up via HDMI to an Anker USB-C hub (A8336) which also does power delivery and provides USB-A ports for my MacBook. I've spent about an hour looking online for solutions, and none of which have worked.

I've attached photos of the display, macOS's Display settings panel, and the monitor's information popover for when the MacBook is closed and when the MacBook is open.

Also puzzling and possibly related to this issue is that under Display settings, sometimes I get an option for "Default", "More space", and "Less space", and other times I am given a list of resolutions (most of the time).

Any idea what is causing this?

Hi ShyPhoenix,

You mentioned that this began after changing the power strip being used with your devices. Have you tried switching back to the old power strip to determine if the same thing occurs? Testing this will allow you to isolate this issue and determine if the power strips is the cause.

Check out additional steps you can take here: If your external display isn't detected or appears blurry when connected to your Mac- Apple Support.

Hope that helps!
