Apple TV 2, Sony Bravia and Sonos Beam

My sonos beam on a Bravia sony (XBR-55X700D) says I'm using AIRPLAY for audio.

• The Sonos beam is connected using HDMI ARC to the Sony.

• Apple TV 2 is connected through another HDMI connection (not ARC).

Why does Sonos app indicate audio is coming in through Airplay? The Apple TV is directly connected to the Bravia. Shouldn't the Sonos audio play through the Sony into the Apple TV? Not through Airplay?

The difference is in Apple TV Audio Output settings.

- Setting the soundbar as audio output, will activate the AirPlay or Bluetooth option.

- Setting the TV as audio output, will activate audio over HDMI. Then set the TV for audio passthrough.

Thank you. I will try this. Though I'm not sure I can set the Sony Bravia TV for audio passthrough. Not sure how to do that. I have looked at all the audio settings on the TV that I can find and I don't see anything specifically called audio passthrough - so I'm not sure what I'm looking for on that front.

Not sure if this matters. The Apple TV is supposed to be plugged into the HDMI ARC input. So is the Sonos. There is only one of these on the Sony so I plugged the Sonos into the ARC and plugged they Apple TV into a regular HDMI input. I'm hoping the Sony passes through the ARC audio hookup.

Sound quality is decidedly better on both Apple TV and the Sony's native android option, but neither sounds quite as good as I'd hoped. And, oddly, I have to turn the sound up far more than I do without the soundbar. Audio from the android tv is Stereo PCM 2.0. I don't think this Bravia has Dolby Atmos (too old).

I get no sound level indicator on the Apple TV now. Not a big deal. Just annoying and puzzling. Thanks so much for responding.

Only the Sonos is supposed to be connected to the ARC port as that is an audio return channel designed to passthrough audio to the soundbar. Other devices will just connect to a regular port.

In order to have the Apple TVs audio set to auto and receive the best possible format you would need a TV with an eARC port (or need to get an adapter like the HD Fury Arcana). When you connect to a regular ARC port you will only get stereo (which will not sound as good), unless you force the Apple TV to output at Dolby 5.1

(settings - video and audio - audio format - change format - Dolby Digital 5.1)

It will depend on the TV as to how it handles a sound level indicator.
