On the left end of the tab bar in Safari, is a little tab, which has nothing to do with anything I'm interested in, but doesn't have the x to close it. Is there a way to elliminate it? Or change it to something I might use?

In your Safari browser Safari>Help> Pinned ...for more info
if you remove all pinned sites you can reasonably expect the little tab to be gone.

If you still have an issue close the Window using the red pill button— Quit Safari and when you relaunch it, hold the Shift key down for new fresh window.
