Can't use a former appleID email as my custom domain for iCloud email

I'm trying to set up a custom domain for my iCloud account. My wife once used her real custom email address as an Apple ID. I deleted that Apple ID about a year ago. But when I try to add that email address (that I own) in step 2 of the custom domains setup it says I can't because it is being used as an Apple ID.

This seems absurd. To block using an email address just because it was part of a long deleted Apple ID.

Does anyone know of a way around this? Without being able to use my wife's actual email address it basically makes the entire custom domain setup pointless.

Hi tinyfly,

For assistance with associating a deleted Apple ID account with a new service, the information below found in the article here can help clarify: How to delete your Apple ID account

"Can I use the primary email address for my deleted Apple ID account to create a new Apple ID or with another existing Apple ID account?

No, once your Apple ID is deleted, you can't use the email address that you used with it to create a new Apple ID. In addition, you can't use that email address with another existing Apple ID except as a rescue email. Also, if your primary Apple ID email address is with a Custom Email Domain, it can never be reused to create an Apple ID after your Apple ID is deleted, even if the domain ownership changes."

You can also view information on how the feature works here: Add an email domain you already own to iCloud Mail on iCloud.com
