An iMessage bug

There is a bug that I have noticed since updating to IOS 16 on my iPhone 11; when I am in a conversation in iMessage and I leave the app for a few minutes (by swiping up) and go to a different app, or just lock my screen, when I open iMessage again, the app opens on the view of all conversations and not the last conversation I was in before leaving the app. It bothers me quite a lot, because I have to choose the conversation over and over again and there is a broken animation when I open the app after having left it for a moment. It never happened prior to IOS 16 with the exception of when I forced the app to close. Now, it happens everytime, even I do not force the app to close. Is there anything I can do to make it go back to how it was before IOS 16? I am currently on IOS 16.2 and the issue has not been fixed.
