My new 24 inch, M1 Chip iMac arrives today, my old iMac is a 21.5 inch late 2013, intel model, I've seen mixed reviews in regards to a clean install vs backing up from the time machine, I rang Apple and they said that it was perfectly fine to back up to the new computer via the time machine, I'm still undecided, thoughts anyone?
If you have setup and are using the new iMac, then you could transfer a few files from the old iMac using File Sharing over your local network. see > Set up file sharing on Mac - Apple Support
Migrating from your old iMac Time Machine backup is the fastest and easiest way to move all of your important data (user settings, photos, doc's, mail, etc..) to the new iMac.
Yeah, but then apple store in Sydney sold me the wrong **** cable so I did a clean install, and waiting on the 'right cable' to be delivered so I only need a few folders from my backup now.
Okay, but I reset the old iMac back to factory settings and the USB adaptor cable will be delivered tomorrow.
Sorry, but there is no way to migrate or retrieve files from the backup drive until you get the proper adapter cable and plug it into your new iMac.
