Dual SIM iMessage issue

I have my default business line (physical SIM) and a personal line (eSIM) active on my phone. I have been able to send/receive iMessage and SMS/MMS from either line.

The issue is that iMessage will randomly switch from the personal line to the business line. I text primarily from my personal line, but it will switch to the business line and then will not let me change it back. This is particularly frustrating since Apple Support page "Using Dual SIM with an eSIM" says:

Switch numbers during a conversation

  1. Tap the number you're using, near the top of the screen.
  2. Choose the number you want to use instead.

However, when I do this, it will temporarily show in the thread "Number changed to personal" but as soon as I send/receive another text it is still stuck on the business line.

Anyone have suggestions on how to make "Switch numbers during a conversation" actually work?

Hello M1ck_3y,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help get your iPhone using the correct number as you expect.

It sounds like you might have set a Preferred Cellular Plan with the contacts. You can also check that your default number is correct. See here:

"Let your iPhone remember which number to use

When you call one of your contacts, you don't need to choose which number to use every time. By default, your iPhone uses the same number that you used the last time you called that contact. If you haven't called that contact, your iPhone uses your default number. You can also specify which number to use for your calls with a contact. Follow these steps:

  1. Tap the contact.
  2. Tap Preferred Cellular Plan.
  3. Tap the number you want to use with that contact."

This Apple Support page has the full details and more steps to take: Using Dual SIM with an eSIM - Apple Support

If the same behavior continues to occur, reach out to Apple directly for additional assistance using: Official Apple Support

We hope this helps to isolate and resolve the issue to get the right number being used for these messages.

Cheers!

Good morning,

I have gone through the steps to set the preferred line for each contact already.

This reply did not respond the issue outlined in my post.

Regardless of the preferred line I have set for each contact, the Conversation Line for messages will switch randomly. The Apple Support page has a section "Switch numbers during a conversation" and following the steps there does not work to change the Conversation Line.
