Apple pencil with lined paper in Pages

I am learning to write in Hindi script and I want to be able to practice writing on lined paper.

I can create a new blank, lined document in Pages on my iPad but my Apple Pencil will only let me start a new drawing on the page. Does anyone know how I can get Pages to accept writing instead of automatically assuming I want to draw a picture every time?

I do not think this is possible with the free Pages app.

You may have to resort to using third party free or pay notes app to do what you wish to accomplish.

I am able to type in Devanagari (the Hindi script) with most apps on my iPad since that can be set up as an option via the general settings for keyboards, although Hindi is not yet available in the new Apple Translate app.

What I particularly want to do, though, is to practice my handwriting using the pencil and lined paper is best for that but in Pages it always defaults to the drawing mode. I can work around this but I was hoping to find a simpler way.
