I cannot write using my Apple Pencil in Notes

I’ve tried to use my Apple Pencil to hand write to but cannot get the Markup button to show up. I can use the pen to annotate photos, pdfs, etc., but cannot in Notes. Is there a solution to this? (I am using IPadOS 16.1)

Hey AlphaVoltrex,

Thanks for the reply. Make sure you have the latest software installed on your iPad next, just in case this is an issue with the software. Use these steps:

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.

Update your iPhone or iPad

Once it's up-to-date, go ahead and use these steps to draw in Notes:

1. Open Notes.
2. Tap  to start a new note.
3. Start drawing with your Apple Pencil.

You can also start by tapping  to open the tool palette. Choose from several drawing tools and colors, and switch to the eraser if you make a mistake. Double-tap the eraser to view erasing options on your iPad. When you draw, you can tilt your Apple Pencil to shade a line and press more firmly to darken the line. You can drag the tool palette to a different edge of the screen. Tap  to auto-minimize the tool palette and see more options.

Use Apple Pencil with your iPad

All the best.

Hello AlphaVoltrex,

After hiding your keyboard, by tapping the button in the bottom right corner of your screenshot, you should be able to write in the Notes app. More details can be found in the following user guide: Draw or write in Notes on iPad

"Draw or write in a note

  1. Start drawing or writing in the note with Apple Pencil. Or to draw or write with your finger, tap the Handwriting Tools button.
  2. Do any of the following:
    • Change color or tools: Use the Markup tools.
    • Adjust the handwriting area: Drag the resize handle (on the left) up or down.
    • Transcribe your handwriting to typed text as you write with Apple Pencil: Tap the Handwriting tool (to the left of the pen), then start writing."

Take care!
