Video lost color after exporting from Photos app

Dear community,

I’m running an iPhone 13 Pro and have decided to shoot some scenes for my video in HDR Dolby Vision for the first time. They playback seamlesly on the iphone.

When I tried exporting from photos app to files on my mac the colors became either flickering gray/yellowish or just gray.

At first I thought that’s an issue with the mac (it’s a 2014 MBP running catalina) but then I realized that playing back from files on my iphone gives me the same corrupted result.

Worst of all because those files were taking considerable amount of space I’ve removed them from photos and cleared the recently deleted folder. I am a bit desperate to get those files working again.

Are those files fixable? Is there any way I could get color back in them. Or maybe play them back on any other device?

Alternatively if not is there any possibility by apple to restore the photo library to a state from before couple of days or so?

Hello PawelKbl,

For the color discrepancy you're seeing when exporting from Photos to Files on your Mac and iPhone, we'd recommend contacting Apple Support.

As far as recovering the original videos, this would depend on the configuration of your devices for Photos.

If you're not using iCloud Photos, your photo library would be included in backups. If this is the case in your situation, you'd need to restore a backup of your device that was made when these videos were still in your Photos library. Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup will walk you through this. Keep in mind, content currently on your device would be erased, and any information added to your iPhone after the backup was created would be lost unless it was synced with iCloud or some other service.

"Restore your device from an iCloud backup

  1. Turn on your device. You should see a Hello screen. If you already set up your device, you need to erase all of its content before you can use these steps to restore from your backup.
  2. Follow the onscreen setup steps until you reach the Apps & Data screen, then tap Restore from iCloud Backup.
  3. Sign in to iCloud with your Apple ID.
  4. Choose a backup. Look at the date and size of each and pick the most relevant. After you choose a backup, the transfer starts. If a message says that a newer version of software is required, follow the onscreen steps to update. If you don't see onscreen steps to help you update, learn what to do.
  5. When asked, sign in with your Apple ID to restore your apps and purchases. If you've purchased iTunes or App Store content using multiple Apple IDs, you'll be asked to sign in to each. If you can't remember your password, you can tap Skip this Step and sign in later. You won't be able to use the apps until you sign in with your Apple ID.
  6. Stay connected to Wi-Fi and wait for a progress bar to appear and complete. Depending on the size of the backup and the network speed, the progress bar might need a few minutes to an hour to complete. If you disconnect from Wi-Fi too soon, the progress will pause until you reconnect.
  7. Now you can finish setup and enjoy your device. Content like your apps, photos, music, and other information will continue to restore in the background for the next several hours or days, depending on the amount of information there is. Try to connect often to Wi-Fi and power to let the process complete."

If you're using iCloud Photos, changes made to your photo library would sync to all other devices using this feature. This would include photos you've deleted from your Recently Deleted album.

Regards.
