What can be done to remedy this issue? I’ve had 0 talk time, minimal sheen time today to find the battery drained and the back of the phone too hot to touch. All this happened the morning after it updated to iOS 16.1.1

With any new version of iOS there are always maintenance and re-indexing tasks to be performed. It should settle down in a few days. These are the standard steps for short battery life:
1) Have you tried a restart? If not, do it now.
2) Go to Settings > Battery > BATTERY USAGE BY APP to see the apps that are consuming your battery.
3) Check “Battery Health” in the link:

4) If all else fails, consider a battery replacement:
If the phone is overheating, see this:
Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures

I ended up turning the phone off for 15 minutes to let it cool off completely. It got a little warm after turning it in but it didn’t last. Today, so far, it’s normal temp and battery seems stable. Will watch it closely though.
I have the same problem this morning… Went through all the normal things to cool the phone this is happening on my Max and also on my regular iPhone 12
