2017 iMac and Ventura. Issues

I have a 2017 iMac and have just updated, with difficulty, to Ventura. There are some issues.

(1) The facility for writing accents (circumflexes, umlauts etc) whereby you hold down the key and a menu pops up displaying the accents available to that letter doesn’t work.

(2) I’ve programmed my mouse to zoom in and out by stroking up or down. This still works after a fashion but it’s gone weird and wobbly.

(3) Using the space bar to add spaces or the delete key will only work one space at a time. You can't space or clear a whole line by holding the key down.

(4) My mailbox wouldn’t open until I gave it permission to rebuild entries. I did this but it displays the message again every time and it’s difficult to open the mailbox.

Ventura 13.0.1 has not rectified any of the above. Has anyone experienced similar problems? Any fixes, or do we have to wait and hope?

Hey there, pauldsh,

Thanks so much for using Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like you're experiencing a few different issues with macOS Ventura that we want to help you with. Given that you have a few separate issues going on, we want to recommend that you try testing out the issues while booted into safe mode. Safe mode can be a really good way of testing issues like this since it allows your computer to boot up with limited processes running in the background helping you diagnose certain issues.

To do that, simply follow the steps here: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

If any of the issues stop occurring in safe mode, you can reboot normally to exit safe mode and test the issue again.

We hope that this information is helpful.

Have a great day!

pauldsh,

Thanks for the additional information regarding your macOS Ventura issues.

The next step is to create a test user account. This will let us know if the issues are with your user account or the macOS itself.

Add account
Create a new user or group.
Click the New Account pop-up menu (you may be asked to enter your password), then choose a type of account.
Administrator: An administrator can add and manage other users, install apps, and change settings. The new user you create when you first set up your Mac is an administrator. Your Mac can have multiple administrators. You can create new ones, and convert standard users to administrators. Don’t set up automatic login for an administrator. If you do, someone could simply restart your Mac and gain access with administrator privileges. To keep your Mac secure, don’t share administrator names and passwords.
Standard: Standard users are set up by an administrator. Standard users can install apps and change their own settings, but can’t add other users or change other users’ settings.
Sharing Only: Sharing-only users can access shared files remotely, but can’t log in to the computer or change settings. To give the user permission to access your shared files or screen, you may need to change options in File Sharing, Screen Sharing, or Remote Management settings. See Set up file sharing and Share the screen of another Mac.
Group: Groups allow multiple users to have the same access privileges. You control a group’s access to your shared folders by setting access permissions in the File Sharing options in Sharing settings.

This info is located in the macOS User Guide: Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support

Please let us know what happens. We'll be here for you.

Take Care!

I already have an account called Tests Accounts. I think it came with the computer. I don’t know which type of account it is. I went into it but did not change anything. I couldn’t see a way of getting out of it and had to turn the computer off manually.

There should be no other user accounts on your Mac except perhaps for a Guest account which is very limited. If you have other user accounts on this Mac which you did not create and which came with the Mac, then it sounds like you have a pre-owned computer which was not properly prepared for sale as described here:

What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac - Apple Support

When acquiring any used device, the device should be reset to factory defaults and a clean OS installed by first erasing the drive so that the device has a factory fresh OS on it, otherwise you don't know what nasty surprises the previous owner may have left behind.

Thank you for spotting my post and responding.

I entered Safe Mode. At least, I think I did. It did not say Safe Mode in the menu bar but the aliases in the dock were enclosed in a box. I did not detect any improvement regarding my problems either inside Safe Mode or after exiting.

My mail program, every time I open it, offers me a choice between “rebuild mail information” and “quit.” I used to select “rebuild,” which can take an hour or two, and it only does the same thing the next time. Now, I’ve found that if I select “quit” a couple of times, it finally lets me into my mailbox.

In addition to the specific problems I’ve described, the computer behaves strangely in other, less problematic, ways. I never had any problems with Monterey.

Regards.

I bought my computer new in 2017. I transferred data to it from a previous iMac using Migration Assistant but that computer too was bought new. It’s always possible that I set up that Test Account at the beginning and had forgotten about it.

I tried going into the Test Accounts user again. It asked me for my ID and password and also my telephone number. I was then given a six-digit code by telephone, which I entered. It then instructed me to create a different password to be used with this account from now on.

The screen was open at System Settings/General/Virus Barrier Events. Nothing I clicked on would open and I exited the user.

Thank you for your continuing assistance.
