I have a Late 2014 5K 27" iMac. OS is 11.7 Big Sur. I have a notification for a software update. When I run check for updates it never completes checking. It just runs and runs and runs. I have powered down and restarted several times.
Anyone have any suggestions for how to fix this? I know I can just ignore it, but I like to stay up to date on my updates.

I understand the Software Update "Checking for update..." indeterminate progress indicator never indicates progress.
Several workarounds have been proposed, such as restarting your Mac in "Safe Mode" and checking for updates while in that mode, and / or resetting NVRAM.

A - The last update to Big Sur is version 11.7.1
A - softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 11.7.1
A - Terminal command above will download the Full Version of Big Sur 11.7.1
A - It will place a new application in Applications folders and Will Not Launch Automatically
A - When ready, launch it like another Application and follow the prompts
