I tried updating my iPad Air 3 to OS 16.1 using my Mac and got the restore screen. It gave me an unknown error 4013 message. I tried the restore & update option and get the same message. Can't say I'm thrilled Apple's update bricked a device I spent a lot of money on just a few years ago.
Any suggestions?

I followed two articles and was able to get out of loop. I felt same way you did. Too much money and couldn’t of been anything except iOS upgrade.

Thanks, I found that in my search. The problem is the Firmware doesn't go back to the Air 3. I'm going to look for it on the site. I do have a question - how did you install it on the iPad from your computer?
Yes from my computer. 15.7 is avail.
after it downloaded I used the option + update button. It asked for file and pointed to my download folder.
and then magically my iPad restored. I am so relieved.
Thank You! It worked.. I tried updating to 16 through my Mac again and ran into the same issue. I'm trying to update through the iPad this time. Hopefully that works. I'm tempted to go back to the guy at the "Genius" Bar and show him, followed by "Logic Board, huh?"
Great. Just curious did you get to iOS16. I could do nothing on iPad as all I had restore screen. And yes Genius Bar needs to work on a better approach to this problem. Asking are you in market for a new iPad is ridiculous. And saying this is a hardware failure with no diagnosis
