My airpods won’t connect to my iphone.

To start, I have an iphone 13 pro on ios16.0 and airpods 2nd generation. I have an old pair of airpod 1s and they work perfect for connection. When I try connect my airpods by simply opening them and placing them in my ears, they don’t connect automatically and I need to connect in setting, whereas my airpod 1s connect to when opened. Now, when trying to connect my airpods , opening the case does not make the light turn on, but when the button is pressed it flashes green for 3 seconds, then turns off with no other response. When held, the light flashes green, and does not reset or turn white, nor show up in bluetooth. I have reset my iphone, and it will not let me reset my airpods. rarely, it will show up as “not your airpods” and, I will follow the prompt to hold the button, and when held it will only flash green and not respond on my iphone. I’ve tried holding it for ages, pushing harder, only pushing it once, yet nothing will work. Any tips?
