Display arrangement changes after sleep or reboot

I have a Mac Mini M1 2020 with two HP 24mh FHD displays, attached to the HDMI and USB-3 ports. It is running Ventura 13.0, but the issue happened in previous OS versions.

When the computer returns from sleep, or in reboot, any of the two displays may become the main one. They appear as HP 24mh (1) and (2) in System Preferences\Displays, but the names change when this happens. I have tried PRAM and SMC reset, but no joy.

The only solution for this is to manually change the display arrangement. Does anyone know of a less bothersome way around this?

You can fix the Sleep issue by disabling it, it’s unnecessary on later Macs, all pain, no gain. To disable, set your Energy Saver settings to as shown:

Separately, avoid manual sleep, use screen lock instead or let the displays switch off/auto-lock on timer. For long or overnight absences, shut.

That works for when the , but just partly. On reboot the computer chooses randomly any of the screens as main display, so the issue is not really solved. Is there any way for the computer to "know" which is the main display or, otherwise, a way to restore without going through Control Panel/Displays/Arrange?

I’m not aware of any, unfortunately. Maybe try another C-DP adaptor? All the best.
