AppleID password not recognised on one device

I have an elderly iMac (2009) running Yosemite. It keeps prompting me that there is a problem accessing iCloud and when I'm prompted to enter my password (which works perfectly on my Macbook, IPad and iPhone) tells me the password is incorrect. It isn't wrong. The same password gets me access to icloud.com and to all my files saved there. I've changed my password several times over the past week in an attempt to fix the issue but to no avail. Each time, every other device responds to the new password immediately but my iMac just doesn't like it.. Any suggestions?

Have you tried restarting the computer? Are you running any anti - virus programs? Using a VPN?

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Thanks for your advice. I do have TotalAV running but no VPN. The problem doesn't appear to be there when I set up a new admin account, but I can't see any of my own files in that configuration. Is that easily fixed?

I've also tried Safe Mode as you suggested, but with no success.

It's a frustrating situation - I'm currently using that same old iMac, signed in to iCloud through Firefox, and every ten minutes or so, that pop-up appears telling me that there is a problem connecting my iMac to iCloud and the exact same password as I use to log-in to iCloud on the web attracts an error message.

Any further advice would be gratefully received.
