New Mac Mini linked to old iMac Mid 2011
Hi
I have a mid-2011 21.5” iMac running high sierra 10.13.6. It’s expensive to replace it with a new iMac so for what I use it for I am considering a Mac mini and connecting it to the iMac display - I don’t need great display, or super speakers or even the camera really so it sounds like a good option for me.
I do however have a couple of questions
1) when the mini is connected to the iMac, can I use the imac dvd drive?
2) I have a number of usb devices connected to my iMac, but the mini only has 2 ports - can I plug in a multi port usb hub and plug and plug those usb devices into that ?
3) the mini I am looking at comes with big-sur .. I assume I will be able to upgrade to later MacOS versions as I would be able to do with an iMac ( up to a point obviously) and I am not always stuck on the big-sur without later patches or version.
4) can I access the disk drive of the iMac to act as additional storage to the mini or is it lost once the Mac mini is connected - I understand that the iMac is still a computer in its own right if I disconnected the mini, but that’s not what I am saying here.
4) what cable do I need to connect the mini to the iMac ?
5) any other compatibility issues I should consider ?
thanks for all advice
