Canon imageclass printer not shown in add printer on Macbook Air

We have two Mac computers and one new Canon ImageCLASS MF453dw laser printer. One Mac is a new Mac Mini and the other is last year's MacBook Air. Both are running OS 12.6. I had no problem connecting the printer to the Mac Mini, but the printer does not appear on the list when you try to add a printer using the printers/scanners module in System Preferences. We have tried resetting the printer which eliminates any printers already on the list. Still nothing appears. We use a WiFi network with a Motorola modem/router.

I need a plan for how to diagnose what is going wrong. The printer is obviously on the WiFi network since we can print from the Mac Mini. So why is the same printer not showing up on the list of printers when you ask to add a printer in system preferences on the MacBook Air?

Thank you for your prompt reply. I was not trying to use AirPrint. The problem was that the operating system running on the MacBook Air could not "see" the printer on the WiFi network and add it to the list of available printers. Working with Apple Tech Support, I could add the printer by using it's IP address instead of finding it by name. The printer is now working. This is not the first time over many years that I have had to use an IP address, usually static, to connect to a Canon printer.

Hi,

A Canon MF453dw is for some reason not shown in About AirPrint - Apple Support (US edition, September 30, 2022), but it was listed in that article's US edition July 01, 2022. A model supporting the driverless AirPrint technology can be used without additional apps/software/drivers, provided that it is connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router) as an iPad, an iPhone, or a macOS computer. An AirPrint-enabled printer is compatible with macOS (12 Monterey). AirPrint is also mentioned in the specifications at https://www.usa.canon.com/shop/p/imageclass-mf453dw .

Have you tried AirPrint, or are you using drivers?

AirPrint printing works with wireless (Wi-Fi) or wired (Ethernet) network connections. The Canon MF453dw could be connected wirelessly to the Wi-Fi router, or by Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports. A Mac can use AirPrint when connected wirelessly or by Ethernet to the router.

If there is a device/computer discovery problem with AirPrint, you could perhaps try a full procedure like this (in the order described, including the waiting times):

Power off the Wi-Fi router, the Canon printer, both Macs, and all other devices/computers. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the router. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the Canon printer. Wait a minute or two. Power on both Macs. Finally, power on all other devices/computers.

If AirPrint is not used, there are recent (10.12.22) drivers in the Downloads section at https://www.usa.canon.com/support/p/imageclass-mf453dw .
