AirTag location will not update

I have recently bought an Air Tag which has been linked to my iPhone. My phone sees the Air Tag and I can see it on Find My Phone. However when we “sent” it away to check it was functioning correctly it will not update. Now my partner also has an iPhone and it sat next to it the whole day and still didn’t update its location until I met up with her and it updated when my phone came in contact with it.

i know it updates from other iPhones which it had came in contact with so why will this not update?

To help you solve your issue, let's remove your AirTag and set it up again using these steps:

"Set up your AirTag

Make sure that your device is ready for setup.
If your AirTag is new, remove the wrap around the product and pull out the tab to activate the battery. Your AirTag will play a sound.
Hold your AirTag near your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, then tap Connect.* If you have multiple AirTags and see "More than one AirTag detected", make sure that only one AirTag is near your device at one time. Need help connecting your AirTag?
Select an item name from the list, or select Custom Name to name your AirTag and choose an emoji. Then tap Continue.
To register your AirTag with your Apple ID, tap Continue again.
Tap Done."
