iphone 6S and Apple Watch Series 6

I have an iphone 6S with 15.7 software, and an Apple Watch Series 6 with 8.7 software, and when I try to update my Apple Watch using my iphone, I get message "to update the software on your apple watch, you first need to update the software on your iphone

You need an iPhone 8, second generation iPhone SE, or newer to update the watch to 9.

Thank you. I started looking at iPhone SE 3rd generation upgrade as that seems to be the best bang for the buck. Thoughts?
