To update the software on your Apple Watch, you first need to update the software on your iPhone

Hi all,

I have got an issue where I have updated my iPhone XS Max to the latest point release of IOS 15 (15.7) and when I come to update my Apple Watch 4 in the Watch app on the phone, it keeps saying “To update the software on your Apple Watch, you first need to update the software on your iPhone” In order to update my Apple Watch 4, do you I need to update to the latest IOS 16 update? I am missing the latest point release update for Watch OS 8.7.1. Your help would be much appreciated.

Hi fieryjack,

Thank you for the prompt response, so does that mean I am no longer able to update my Apple Watch to Watch OS 8.7.1? I am hesitant to update my iPhone to the latest IOS as I use it as a work phone as well as a personal phone.

Ah right, so the update won’t have been applicable to my model of Apple Watch hence why I didn’t get the update, that makes sense. I will wait a bit longer before putting IOS 16 on my iPhone. Thank you for your help.

To update to WatchOS9 your phone needs to be running ios16.

WatchOS8.7.1 was mainly a bug fixing update for watch3's that kept restarting.
