what is error code 4000 and how can i remedy this, thanks

I'm trying to sync my iPhone into iTunes to restart it as it doesn't have the option available whilst locked. Ive tried on 2 different computers however iTunes keeps showing error '4000' unable to restore device. can someone please tell me where I'm going wrong. please and thank-you
