Macbook Pro M1 Max does not support 49" monitor on 5120x1440 resoluton

Hi,

I've just bought new 49" AOC AGON AG493UCX monitor that should support 5120x1440 resolution. I've tried to connect my Macbook Pro M1 Max 14" to that monitor but the maximal resolution Mac offers me is 3840x1080. Thats such a joke.

Few more additional information

  • Mac is on the lastest MacOS version (monterey 12.6)
  • I've read multiple issues from people with same situation that were created more than a year ago (!)
  • I've tried to set refresh rate to 60 Hz
  • I've changed the cable to brand new usb 40 gbps cable capable to transfer 8K resolution, none of the original one (from the monitor manufacturer) worked
  • On my windows machine, everything works fine using the 5120x1440 resolution

Is this some kind of joke Apple can not solve this issue for a more than a few years? Even on high end machines that should be able to fullfill this monitor?

I would like to kindly ask apple support not to send me articles how to connect monitor to mac and other articles that are completely useless. I am fully capable to connect monitor to my Mac, the problem is mainly with resolution....

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 12.6

That display appears to have TWO DisplayPort inputs. Have you tired connecting with a USB-C to DisplayPort cable?

The display manual implies that the display does not support High Dynamic Range (HDR) over the DP Alt mode encapsulated in USB-C input signals.

HDR

It is compatible with input signals in HDR10 format.

The display may automatically activate the HDR function if the player and content are compatible. Please contact the device manufacturer and the content provider for information on the compatibility of your device and content. Please select “OFF” for the HDR function when you have no need for automatical activation function.

Note:

      1. Only the HDMI interface is available and the DisplayPort interface cannot function in WIN10 version V1703.
      2. The USB C (DP Alt) interface does not support HDR.
      3. The display resolution is set to DP:5120x1440@60Hz, HDMI:3840x1080@60Hz, and HDR is preset to ON. Under these conditions, the screen may slightly dim, indicating HDR has been activated.

Are you using a Dock, KVM switch, or any intervening item other than a high-speed cable?

How long is your cable?

do you have any other cables connected to the display at the same time?

The 'natural' fallback resolution of that MacBook Pro when 5K is not possible is 4096 by 2304 (4K).

This implies that the DISPLAY is providing misleading information about its capabilities, or there are additional settings that must be made in the display (using built-in On Screen Display settings) to tell it to use its 5K wide resolution.

The cable is 1meter long.

I´ve tried to DP 1.4 cable to USB in meanwhile and it works with given resolution as charm. Problem is I need a power delivery as well.

There is no other settings on display to tell what resolution I want.

It´s kinda sad the new Macbook does not support this resolution and much cheaper windows/linux notebooks (I´ve tried) has no problem with that.
