Need to decrease the megabytes of a photo to upload it for a profile picture.

In the Mac Photos app, select the photo then click File menu > Export > Export 1 photo. Then click the down arrow to the right of Photo Kind to access quality and size options.

With File>Export you can choose the the size of the image. Try Medium. Or, with Custom, you can set the number of pixels.
