“All caps” for iPhone Dictation

Mac Dictation allows you to do title case for a phrase by saying “caps on,” and also allows an entire phrase in all capital letters by saying, “all caps on.”

Are these commands just not available on iOS dictation?

iPhone 12 mini, iOS 16

I am using dictation using the iPhone 12 Mini’s built-in microphones. I had the same problem with the iPhone SE (2nd Gen).

All other punctuation and dictation functions (“new line,”etc) seem to be fine, but the capitalization functions have not worked for a number of years.

It seems like the only one that works is “all caps,” which puts a single word in all capital letters.

The following commands do NOT work:

  • Cap (should capitalize one word)
  • Caps on (Should capitalize the first letter of every word following (also called Title Case).
  • All caps on (Should put all following text in all capital letters).

Here is another dictation test of these three commands:

this is a cap test.

This is caps on a test.

This is ON a test.

Note that for the last one, I said,

“This is all caps on a test”

Thanks for looking into this!

Good day LEGO Damashii,

The following article has some punctuation and formatting options you can use with Dictation.

Use Dictation on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Use punctuation and formatting
You can add punctuation by saying what you want. For example, "Hello John comma the check is in the mail exclamation mark" becomes "Hello John, the check is in the mail!"

Here are some common punctuation and formatting commands that you can use:
• Quote/end quote: begin and end a quote
• New paragraph: start a new paragraph
• New line: begin a new line
• Cap: capitalize the next word
• Caps on/caps off: capitalize the first character of each word
• Smiley: insert :-)
• Frowny: insert :-(
• Winky: insert ;-)

Thanks.

Thank you for those details. We would like to find out more.

We understand that the “caps on/caps off” command is not responding as expected. To confirm, do you notice any similar issues when using other punctuation or formatting commands?

When you notice this problem, are you using dictation with a connected wired or wireless headset?

Please reply back when you have time!

Thanks, but the capitalization commands described in that article do not work, and have not worked for several updates of iOS, since iOS 10 at least.

for example, I’m using cap dictation now.

it doesn’t caps on seem to work for me at all

In the above examples, I used the word “cap” and the phrase “caps on,” but instead of capitalizing, anything, it just typed out the words “cap” and “caps on.”

Have these capitalization commands been disabled in iOS dictation?

Thanks for any additional information you are able to provide!
