I have an iPad Pro 9.7 inch (model number MLQ62B/A running iPadOS15.7) and I want to be able to upload photos from an iPhone 6S that I’m about to buy as a spare mobile.
Will I be able to do this or are there any compatibility issues that I need to be aware of?

The easiest way: On both devices, go to Settings/[your name]/iCloud/iCloud Photos and turn the switch on. If you have more than will fit in your free 5 GB you can rent 50 GB of iCloud space for 99¢ a month. The just wait with both devices connected to power.

What I’d suggest to remove any real compatibility issues is to use a third party service - like dropbox or some other cloud save option and upload them there, then download them to the other device. As long as the app you choose is compatible with both operating systems you may be running it should work fine.
