Greyed out privacy setting in Monterey

I need to add Garmin POI loader app to "files and folders" in my privacy settings but the option to add is greyed out. This occurs with all profiles and in safe boot. I've added "allow apps downloaded from anywhere" to the general tab. I've also added the app to "full disk access" but that doesn't help. My version of Monterey on a MacBook Pro is up to date. Any other suggestions?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 12.5

Thank you for the explanation, the point is that I can't add or remove any app from "files and folders" so it is not specific to the Poi Loader issue, I need to understand why Monterey OS is preventing access to that function.

I will try to explain again: it is not meant to be added manually. Each application should "ask for permission".

For example, suppose you install an application, let's call it "MyApp".

The first time "MyApp" tries to access a file, say, in Documents, or a folder inside Documents, you should get a dialog like this:

Click OK. Then you can manage this access later in System Preferences->Security & Privacy, by checking or unchecking the box.

What you can't do is go to System Preferences->Security & Privacy->Files and Folders, and add applications there.

  • POI Loader allows you to load custom points of interest into your unit. The input files can be downloaded from the internet or you can create your own. With POI Loader, you can configure the unit to alert you when you are within a certain distance of a point or if you are driving over a certain speed near a point; perfect to warn you about upcoming schools zones, red lights and speed cameras. The unit will also allow you to search for and navigate to the loaded points of interest.
  • System Requirements:
  • Intel based Mac running OS 10.10 or higher.

There are a lot of Versions between OS X 10.10 Yosemite and macOS 12 Monterey

Even the Apple Apps Store is offering the same 2.4.2 version

Thanks, but that's not the issue. The latest Garmin camper satnavs are android so the Macbook doesn't recognise them as a removable drive. The workaround is to get PoiLoader recognised in Privacy (Files and Folders) so that the "removable drive" option can be checked. My issue is that the option to add the app is greyed out.

Thanks for the help, but the POI Loader app does seem to work in Monterey, the issue is because the satnav is android, the Loader app doesn't recognise the satnav when connected to the laptop. Garmin reckon the fix is to add POI loader app to "Files and Folders" in Privacy and enable "removable volumes" to allow the satnav to be recognised as a destination.

Otherwise it looks like I'll have to find/borrow a Windows machine !!! :-))

That assumption is incorrect.

Files and Folders allows a more granular approach- for example an application may be allowed to save under Documents but not under Desktop.

On the other hand, Full Disk Access is a blanket permission to save on (or read from) any location. * One notable example that I am very familiar with is Final Cut Pro. We need to give it Full Disk Access, so that, among other things, it can import from SD cards… eminently removable media 😎

* provided that it is writable and the user has permission to it, of course
