Studio Display speaker volume very weak on its highest setting!

I just received my new studio display. I was excited about playing music through the speakers. Much to my dismay the volume is very weak. When the volume is at the half-way mark on the dial, you can barely hear it. I have turned the output volume up to maximum to get a "medium to low" volume level. This is not what I expected from these speakers. Am I doing something wrong or is this a defect?
