New MacBook Pro (13-inch, M2, 2022) / Mac os 12.4 (NOT RECOGNIZING FAT32 USB DRIVES)

I'm unable to use my FAT32 USB drive on my new macbook. I know the drive works because I can see it on other slightly older macbooks and my widows based machine. Am I missing something like a driver or an update or setting to get this working?

Try exFAT format and compare your results...report back your findings.

The current stable release of Monterey including bug fixes, is macOS 12.5.1

Some third party devices just may not be compatible with an M1/M2 Mac. Even macOS 12.x Monterey is known to have some compatibility issues with some devices.

What did you use to format the drive as exFAT? Did you do this on your M2 mac? Or an older Mac? Windows? macOS doesn't always recognize exFAT volumes formatted on other systems.

Also make sure to know whether your printer requires an MBR partition on the drive. How you erase the drive with macOS will determine whether macOS retains the partition type or whether it will change it as @Grant mentions.

Make sure to disconnect all other external devices from the laptop in case one of them is interfering.

if this M2 Mac is seeing an exFAT volume as FAT16, then something is causing a compatibility issue. Try using another drive. If this is an SD card, then try using an SD card adapter instead of the SD card slot on the laptop. I have seen some people report a third party adapter will sometimes help with SD card issues. You may need to try a different USB device.

Edit: Also try booting the laptop into Safe Mode which disables third party software from launching automatically during boot & login. Some third party software interferes with the normal operation of macOS (anti-virus apps, cleaning apps, & third party security software).
