Constant slow-downs, freezes, spinning beachballs — help!

My 2015 iMac 27" has started behaving erratically within the last week, across multiple applications. I'll get the spinning beachball, for instance, in Messages while typing a message. Sometimes it resolves after a bit, sometimes it does not. Sometimes, Chrome takes forever to load a page. Sometimes that ends up with a spinning beachball, sometimes the page eventually loads. Mail messages will sometimes not pull up.

Once the erratic behavior starts, it usually results in the need for a forced reboot when I try to force-quit one of the misbehaving apps, which results in the dock freezing.

I've done a virus scan and run First Aid (no problems found). I deleted a screensaver app (Aerial) I thought might be causing a conflict. I turned off automatic backups on Time Machine because I noticed they were huge (6 gigs at only 41 percent complete).

I'm at the stage where I'm planning to wipe the machine, restore the software and restoring from a backup.

Any other steps I should take before doing that?

iMac 27″, macOS 12.5

Perhaps you could start in Safe mode & take some time to Backup the Mac.

The Time Machine takes longer with larger backups; if Mac drive is full,

temporary backups there [ones in the Mac's drive] use space too.

To see what's going on, consider getting free utility EtreCheck from

the makers site, and run that; set it to view more background details.

This is not the optional cost Power User Package; so the utility is Free.

No anti-virus third party software is necessary; you may run malwarebytes for mac

and isolate the offending malware or adware components; EtreCheck helps too.

Here's the report. It says no major issues. A few minor issues like heavy RAM usage, which doesn't surprise me. There are some kernel extensions I should probably go through and delete — Parallels, Splashtop, etc. And I see some Aerial files are still floating around. I'll get rid of those.

I welcome any suggestions based on the report.

Thank you!

One slower point in the hardware, would be the 'Fusion' drive

~ where part is small fast SSD, & a larger rotational 7200-RPM.

A harddisk drive in same container. ~ A large slower spinner.

A way around that would be to use an external SSD (OWC

has) Fast enclosure & cables; to run entire system from there.

'Envoy' external SSD within an enclosure, seems like an idea.

Use of faster cables & dedicated SSD, can bypass internal HD.

..Because iMac is most difficult to DIY upgrade internal storage..

Display has to come off, to access space behind for HDD, etc.

Also DIY internal upgrades kits are available, are tech-minded kits.

https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/imacdiy/

Prospects should inquire of AASP if they could do internal upgrade.

And IF they could use OWC parts, if supplied by AASP to upgrade.

Or if you are handy, and have tech skills, DIY may be worthwhile.

Other options, OWC has upgrades guaranteed to work w/ iMac.

The hardware is a slow-point, bigger files and newer macOS.

The EtreCheck report can include more detail when selected.

And the symptoms suggest 'other busywork' going on. Check

& see what Activity Monitor shows; run that on top of all else.
