Cannot send email using p71-smtp.mail.me.com in iOS 15.6

Two days after upgrading to iOS 15.6, on my iPhone 12 Mini, I am unable to send mail. I use iCloud (mail.me.com) and the native Mail app. I may receive mail with no problem.

I went to settings as the error directs but and tried to add another email server but was not successful.

I have restarted the iPhone, but have not "reset" it. I thought perhaps to delete the iCloud account and then rebuild it but am not sure exactly how to do this. I do not recall any warning signs/errors prior to this. It just start spontaneously. The 15.6 update took place with no errors either during the update or immediately after.

I have searched Discussions and found a few similar questions and tried the solutions offered with no luck. Most of them are a few years old and on much earlier s/w levels.

I have attached a screen shot of the error.

Hello camionneur88,

The first thing that we would recommend would be to toggle Low Power Mode back off. Tap on Settings > Battery and toggle Low Power Mode off. Low Power Mode prevents some functions from operating. We want to be sure everything is working as we troubleshoot. After toggling Low Power Mode off, restart the iPhone and see if you can send emails.

If the issue continues after restarting, we would go ahead and add the account again using these steps found at Set up iCloud for Mail on all your devices - Apple Support:

Set up iCloud for Mail on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

1. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud.

2. If you want to send and receive iCloud Mail on your device, turn on iCloud Mail (or Mail).

3. If you want to keep Mail settings up to date across your devices, turn on iCloud Drive. The following settings stay up to date:

• The order of your mailboxes (for all iOS and iPadOS devices)

• Email address suggestions (for all iOS, iPadOS, and macOS devices)

• VIPs (for all iOS, iPadOS, and macOS devices)

4. To view your iCloud Mail, open the Mail app. Tap a mailbox or folder in the iCloud section.

Follow-up to my question. The problem was caused by my SurfShark VPN. They, apparently with little or no notice, stopped supporting port 587. However, that being said port 587 should still continue to work on SurfShark's German static IP servers No. 1-3. I can confirm that it does.

An alternative would be to configure your mail to use port 465 or 2525. If they, for some reason, do not work then accessing email through a browser is another alternative.

Here are the steps to configure your email for port 465 or 2525.

Click on the Settings icon.

Scroll down until you see Mail, Contacts, Calendar. Click.

Select the Outgoing Server from the left menu.

Click on the email account you want to edit and click Edit.

Click on the email account again to open the Accounts screen.

Click on SMTP under the Outgoing Mail Server.

Click on the outgoing mail server under Primary Server.

Click on Authentication and select Password.

Click on Server Port to change the port number.

Change the port to 465 and select SSL from the encryption drop-down menu.

Thank you for the response. I followed your steps but to no avail. Then I discovered that the root cause of the issue was a change made by SurfShark VPN. I have posted the resolution as a [reply] follow-up to my original question.

See my [reply] follow-up under my original question. My solution will probably not help you but you should be aware of it, especially if you use SurfShark VPN. I use that on my iPhone and NordVPN on my MacBook Pro. I did not have the same trouble on my MacBook. If you use a VPN then you should look into that possibility for your problem.
