Books crashing when trying to view PDFs on iPhone 13

I have a new iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 15.6. Every time I try to open a PDF in Books, the application crashes. Sometimes I can scroll through a page or two before it crashes, or even look at a PDF that has previously crashed the app, but any time I open a new one or scroll through more than 1-2 pages, it immediately crashes. I use this app CONSTANTLY. It's one of the main reasons I use apple devices... the ability to sync my reading of PDFs across iPhone, iPad, and my laptop. This is a MAJOR issue that was not a problem on my previous iPhone XS Max. It seems like this may be a known problem? Is there a solution?
