What is “search” in privacy > location services on iPhone

On setting there are 2 options: "Never" and "When I Share"

What is the effect of the above settings? which app or service is impacted?

This question has been around for years in multiple places, but no clear answer so far.

Hello Dustin,

I hope you do not mind if I say that your answer is useless.

There isn't any App whose name is "Search", but there is an entry in the above list - see picture.

So the point is: what is this "Search" item which uses the default icon, why is it there, and what happens specifically for that item if we give it a location permission?

If you google this question or a variation of it, you will find many ones, all without an answer!

Greetings FedericoV62,

The option of "never" means that the app in question will not use your location, nor will it ask for permission to use your location. "When shared" means that the app will ask before using that location services and you can then choose to either share, or not to share. You can learn more here:

Hello again FedericoV62,

Thanks for the follow-up info. On your iPhone, Location Services is in essence a "middle man" between your location data and the apps trying to access it. Apps use location data to personalize many different "experiences". Third-party apps will also try to use your search queries to help you locate things like restaurants or coffee shops. Selecting "Never" removes the apps ability of the apps to utilize your search history to pinpoint specific locations. If you choose "When I Share", the apps will use your search history and provide detailed locations to whoever you have shared the app or app info with. Complete details can be found here:

We hopes this answers that question for you.

Take care and stay safe.
