I cannot ope attachments in older emails. I can see the attached as per below, but not sure how to get it to open.

Can anyone advise me on this.

How old...(?) Is this through several macOS's....
Is this a one-off issue or universal, all attachments?
Did you try Control click the attachment>"Open With" —and choose a different software to open(?)
What happens if you download a new version of the pdf...(?)

Thank you for getting back to me.
This happens with all my apple devices, iphone, iPad and MacBook air and not a one off thing. The attachment can be a week old or a few months.
I can open the attachment when the email comes through but later if I try to open the attachment again, being pdf or jpeg it will not open.
