time machine
What daemon is running when Time Machine is active? I don't see anything on the Activity Monitor that tells me it's running but all I see is preparing backup.
Thanks

Most of the preparing is, for lack of a better term, weeding the target of the backup, or (occasionally) rebuilding the change metadata for the source volume.
To learn more: man tmutil, and see Pondini more generally: http://oldtoad.net/pondini.org/TM/Home.html
For an old Apple page on “preparing”: https://web.archive.org/web/20140228024422/http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1516
AFAIK, there’s no progress indicator available.

Thanks for your reply. I consider my question answered and my issue resolved. The backup ran eventually after I killed it, rebooted and restarted TM. Appreciate your response.
Thanks and regards
