The final word from Apple on Managing the " Other/ System Data “ Category

Other / System Data: Contains files that don’t fall into the categories listed here. This category primarily includes files and data used by the system, such as log files, caches, VM files, and other runtime system resources. Also included are temporary files, fonts, app support files, and plug-ins. You can't manage the contents of this category. The contents are managed by macOS, and the category varies in size depending on the current state of your Mac.

Thanks, I solved my problem, I used "command + shift + period (.)" and arranged by size and , lo and behold, the "cores" file was taking upon 1.6 TB.

As it turns out, I had a camera viewing app (SmartPSS) that was generating a 10 GB core dump every time I quit.

Deleted the core dumps, updated the app and good as new.

BTW, I found it by trial and error as I could not find out how to read a core dump.

I just left the finder window opened and watched to see if any news core dumps happened as I used various apps and I got a new dump whenever I viewed my cameras remotely
