Preview on iPad crashes.

I have the iPad Pro 11" model (the newest one). The storage is half full, and no apps are running in the background. Many times, when I use the preview app and write notes, the app suddenly crashes and deletes a lot of the notes I've made. Man' it's frustrating. I expected more from a company like Apple. It happened on the notes app too, though much less frequently. Did any of guys run into this problem does someone have a solution?

Thanks for the help!

Hi,

I’m having the same problem when I view large multi-page PDF files via the files app. I am trying to view files that are PDF sets of architectural drawings that have 20+ pages and the files app glitches out and reverts to the first page even before I try to mark up any of the drawings. I first noticed the issue because I would spend several hours marking up revisions to a whole set of drawings only to have the files app glitch, revert to the first page, and all of my markups (and hours of billable time) are gone. These PDFs are created by me (or my team) with Autodesk products however the issue seems to occur irrespective of what program produced the PDF (adobe products, MS products, etc).

Reading multiple apple community posts, this seems to be an issue apple has known about for at least a few years so I want to know when a bug fix is going to be issued.

Hey there amitbloomberg7,

That's helpful to know. We look forward to hearing more about if this is happening with specific PDF files, and if they were downloaded, created by you, or obtained by another source. This will help to determine the appropriate steps to troubleshoot your issue. For example, if this is occurring with specific PDF files that were downloaded, you'll want to delete them and download a new version of the PDF file.

Have a good one!

Good afternoon amitbloomberg7,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

The Preview app is available on the Mac, but not on the iPad. Can you confirm which app for iPadOS you are using? You can add notes to a PDF on a Mac, but the Preview app is not used primarily for that notetaking.*

Can you provide a few more details regarding your experience with the Notes app on your iPad? Have you updated to the most recent version of iPadOS?

The resources below will help with this:

Welcome Amitbloomberg7,

It sounds like you may be referring to Markup on the iPad. Are you using an Apple Pencil? When we opened both the Files and Mail apps to view PDFs, we couldn't find a way to add a note only use Markup.

Learn more about using Markup here: Draw in apps with Markup on iPad - Apple Support

Does this happen to all PDFs or does this only occur with specific PDFs? Are these PDFs you are downloading from a specific location or are you creating them?

The more we know about what's going on, the better we can assist.

Hoping to hear back, take care.

Hey there,

I’m a student and it usually happen when I view large files. The files are from a drive and many other students use them. Furthermore, when I use adobe acrobat it works just fine (i prefer the apple ui over the adobe though). I can’t exactly put my finger on what causing it, but it seems to me like a kind of bug. But it is annoying. Maybe apple should consider making a version of preview for iPad (which will be more robust and functional).

thank you all for your responses!
