As for replacing that battery, that may not be necessary. So, try troubleshooting it...

A. Black Mac Screen:

Using External Devices: Try Resetting the SMC and NVRAM, but this time, using an external keyboard. Connect an external monitor and see if you get an output.

B. Mac Power Issues:

Try a New Charger:

There is an almost endless list of ways to physically destroy a Mac at home, but if you're worried about sensitive data, and you still can't start up, the path always leads to an Apple store. And that's for physical repairs or recycling. And recycling ultimately means physical destruction if the Mac is hopeless. So it's kind of a "choose your poison" situation.
