AirTag is failing to enter lost mode

Hi, my AirTag is failing to enter lost mode with a mobile phone number but does enter with an email address. Why is this? Also, when it enters lost mode I do not receive a notification when it gets "found" when testing it with a friend. Why is this? PLEASE DO NOT JUST SEND ME THE GENERIC LINK OF HOW TO ENABLE LOST MODE BECAUSE I'M DOING THAT BUT STILL HAVING THESE ISSUES. Thanks, Rob.

When attempting to set up lost mode, do you see an option to "add a phone number instead" if you're prompted only with the option to enter an email address?


Additionally, are you attempting to enable lost mode using your iPhone? Just to confirm, those steps would be as follows:


Turn on Lost Mode for an item

To mark an item as lost, you need to turn on Lost Mode.
Tap Items at the bottom of the screen, then tap the name of the lost item.
Under Lost Mode, tap Enable.
Follow the onscreen instructions to enter a phone number where you can be reached. To enter an email address instead, tap “Use an email address.”
You can also receive a notification when an updated location for the item is viewable in Find My.
Important: Make sure you allow notifications for the Find My app. See Change notification settings on iPhone.
Tap Activate.
