AirTag error failed enabling lost mode

Hi, I have a number of AirTags and have tried to put one of them into lost mode to test the process but keep getting an error failed enabling lost mode unable to enable lost mode. I have tested this one all of my AirTags and am getting the same error. Some are in range and some are not but all behave the same giving this error. Could someone please let me know what I’m doing wrong. I am using the find my app, selecting the tag and selecting lost mode from the tag via the app so not sure what I’m missing.

I have been facing the same issue where I could not activate Lost Mode. I kept trying with a cell phone number and it kept failing. Finally I tried using an email address instead and it worked. I wonder if it has to do with the phone number format.
