Duplicate music files

ITunes does a great job identifying the duplicate files. Two questions:

Are the files listed ALL duplicates and one is the original or are both duplicates?
Why oh why did apple not think to include a delete duplicates button? Amazing.

Whole Apple Music Library Duplicated with mp3 and m4a files At some point recently my whole Apple library was duplicated and I cannot figure out how to purge the duplicate copy of each song with out deleting them one by one. I saw that others had a similar issue with the duplicate copy being a cloud file, but that does not seem to be what is going on in this case. I tried logging out and logging back into iTunes, but it did not resolve the duplicates. When I look closely at what the duplicate files are, one of them is in the mp3 format and one is in the m4a format. Can someone please help me resolve this issue, so that I can start enjoying my music library again?

Apple Music duplicate songs I have a number of duplicate songs in my music library. How do I delete the dupes?

iTunes/Music will list all of the duplicates, not indicating any preference for one over another.
Probably because deduping is actually a more complex process than it might at first seem.
