Whole Apple Music Library Duplicated with mp3 and m4a files

At some point recently my whole Apple library was duplicated and I cannot figure out how to purge the duplicate copy of each song with out deleting them one by one. I saw that others had a similar issue with the duplicate copy being a cloud file, but that does not seem to be what is going on in this case. I tried logging out and logging back into iTunes, but it did not resolve the duplicates. When I look closely at what the duplicate files are, one of them is in the mp3 format and one is in the m4a format. Can someone please help me resolve this issue, so that I can start enjoying my music library again?

Thanks Justin,

Unfortunately, I have many thousands of songs in my library and almost all of them are duplicated. I am well aware of how to search for duplicates, but it would take hours to go through and delete them all one by one. I need a way to delete all the duplicates in an automated fashion.

Hello Oakglade,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help you get the most from using Apple Music on your Mac. You can use these steps to remove duplicates which should resolve the issue:

"Find duplicate items in Music on Mac

You can find every instance of a song by the same artist anywhere in your music library. For example, the same song could appear on the artist’s album and on a movie soundtrack.

You can also search for exact duplicates, in which a song, artist, album, and version are all the same (if, for example, you inadvertently imported a song twice).

  1. In the Music app  on your Mac, click Songs in the sidebar on the left.
  2. Select an item, then do one of the following:
    • Find every instance of that item in your library: Choose File > Library > Show Duplicate Items.
    • Find exact duplicates: Hold down the Option key, then choose File > Library > Show Exact Duplicate Items."

This Apple Support page has the full details: Find duplicate items in Music on Mac - Apple Support

We hope this helps to remove the duplicates in Apple Music.

Cheers!

Do you subscribe to Apple Music or iTunes Match? A possible explanation for the duplicates could be that you had .mp3 files that were matched, later had some corruption of the library leaving you seeing cloud copies of everything, those could have been downloaded, and then you could have imported all local content, giving rise to the two copies. Or you could have started with .m4a files and converted to .mp3 for compatibility with some piece of hardware or software without removing from the library after the conversion. If you put the library in the Same Album or Exact Duplicates view you can sort by Date Added or Media Kind and select the duplicate copies that you want to remove in batches, then delete them. I would back up everything first.
