Apple Music allows you to access the entire Apple Music catalog for as long as you continue to pay the monthly fee. You also have the option of buying music from the iTunes Store that is yours to use forever. Which method of accessing music is best for you is something only you can answer. For me, it's a mix of both.

Apple Music allows me to listen to anything that strikes my fancy at no incremental cost. If I end up really liking something, I can always buy a copy.

You will lose everything once you stop the subscription to Apple Music including downloaded songs.

Instead, buy songs from iTunes Store that will remain with you always.
