I am trying to update my late 2012 iMac (Mojave) to Catalina.
The process start and the the following message appears:
"An error occurred while installing the selected updates."
I've installed Catalina updates on other iMacs of the same vintage in recent weeks.
I haven't tried the recovery option yet.

I already knew most of what was suggested in your list of remedies. It turned out to be a network issue at my school (Apple inadvertently "blocked" by our Windows server tech ... we authenticate via Active Directory). All is well now.
