Location Service

The location function on my iMac - Monterey - is hopelessly and incorrigibly inaccurate. I live in the Lake Tahoe area but the system consistently places me in either Sacramento, Las Vegas or even Salt Lake City, but never where I really am. Consequently I am getting a lot of unsolicited information about events or offers in those places instead of getting unsolicited information for where I actually am.

I was looking for a way to set the location manually, but the closest to that is selecting the time zone, which only enlarges the area for unsolicited information to include everything between the Mexican and Canadian borders.

Any ideas on how to make this function usable?

you first need to turn on wi-fi on the iMac end. (even if NOT connected to the router's wi-fi). then go into System Preferences > Security & Privacy, in the "privacy" tab. unlock the lock and choose "location services" from the left sidebar. then make sure that "safari" is selected.

then when you encounter a site that asks for your location, just click "allow" in the popup window.

before i set mine up, i would be shown my location as being 400 KM from where i am actually at. after setting it up, my location is shown as within a few meters to a couple KM of my actual location. (as long as the page is coded correctly)

For location Mac uses the location of your wifi router (via its unique MAC address) that is in Apple's database. The database is updated with info thar Apple obtains for Apple devices that include GPS like iPhones and maybe iPads with cellular.radios since those include GPS.

I know of no way to update Apple's database.

Do you have an iPhone?

If you are not using wifi then your ISP may be providing date based on info they have. That data is not genually accurate.

In addition to the accurate answers that you have already received: are you running some form of VPN? This can have the effect of making you appear to be somewhere else.

You should only use one as required by employer or school in order to access their network.

Using a public vpn with a perception that it may give you enhanced security is deeply misguided.
