How do i connect them when it says this apple ID cannot be used to unlock this apple watch when it has been set back to default settings?

My girlfriend bought it for me and it turns out that my iphone is to new for the watch thank you for your help though.
i have entered my apple id and password to connect the two and i get the message this apple id cant be used to connect to this watch what do i do?
