Home network connections using Monterey

I have three Macs connected on my home network, none are running the "server" software. Prior to upgrading to Monterey I had no problem connecting between each of these computers and accessing any file or folder on the others. However, after upgrading to Monterey my other computers no longer even show up unless I use the menu "Go To Server". And then, once I do connect using my common account credentials, I am unable to access (read or write) my user account folders (desktop, downloads, documents, etc.) though I can access other folders as well as attached USB drives. I've been thru all of the obvious preference screens so, am I missing something or is this now the normal behavior under Monterey?

Hi Ford49,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having an issue with sharing files and folders. We're happy to provide some information to assist.

If attempting to access from any guest account, be sure the “Allow guest users to connect to shared folders” is selected.

As you mentioned you've checked the normal settings, was it with the guide here?: Set up file sharing on Mac

If all settings are correct, we'd recommend also checking your firewall settings. About the application firewall

Overall guide page here has some helpful details as well: Share your Mac screen, files, and services with other users on your network

Should you continue to have any issues, hopefully others may have some personal experience and will post. If not, reach out to Apple support directly to further assist.

Hi Ford49,

Thanks for the information. Even though the account used is the administrator, we'd recommend checking the permissions. Change permissions for files, folders, or disks on Mac

It certainly is interesting you're seeing the Apple ID listed and not the login name. Possibly testing with a new user with current permissions can help further isolate. Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

However, if no one else posts as I haven't dealt with the issue personally be sure to connect with Apple Support directly.

Best!

Yes, I followed the "Set up file sharing on Mac" guide. However, my results do no agree with that guide. Specifically, when I connect from my MacBook to my iMac account (same username and credentials) I am unable to see the contents of my desktop, downloads, or documents folders on the iMac. If I try to copy a file from my MacBook to one of those folders on my iMac I am told I do not have permission to access that folder even though I am the administrator. I also do not have access to any other user folders, I can see only my account folders.

I have noticed that even though I select "Connect As..." and use my login name and password, the Finder shows me "Connected As <my AppleID unsername>" and I am unable to force it to log me in using my login name.

Apparently the problem is somehow tied to iCloud. I currently do not use iCloud for any services other than Siri - my Internet Accounts preferences has only the Siri box checked. With that box checked, I can connect to my other computers but just cannot access certain folders or attached USB drives, as previously described. However, when I uncheck the Siri box my computer is then unable to connect to my other computer that is using smb; it does connect to the one still using afp without issue. Yet, I can still use screen sharing regardless of my Internet Accounts settings.
