How can I reactivate Apple Watch updating iOS when paused?

I have a brand new series 7 watch and never updated the software (from version 8.0.1) - but it's asking for it (to version 8.1), but it keeps telling me it has paused and I need to place the watch on the charger (50% +), in reach of the iPhone and on the same wifi. Well, done, but no reaction. Any suggestions?
